i didn't see any threads about veganism other than recipes, so i thought if anyone could help me..
iдm doing an essay on veganism, and since i'm writing about it, i wanted to try being it as well.. and the thing is, i've never been anything but a meateater my whole life, so any advice to survive this time i'm a vegan would be great.. maybe you people have some advice that i haven't really thought of?

thanks!

Eat lots of fruits, veggies and rice. And since you're dropping meat, get your proteins through soy milk, tofu, and/or beans. When you look at ingredients, there's a lot you need to cancel out that you may not have thought of. Like whey. Whey is often used in things like bread and noodles. So you really have to check everything until you're familiar with brands and what not that don't use it. I highly recommend going to farmer's markets instead of regular grocery stores. And shopping for organic foods makes finding vegan foods easier. Also, be aware that there are lots of replacement foods! There's a vegan butter called Earth Balance, they have vegan cheese, sour cream, vegan meats, egg replacements etc. etc. [b:3vum75gy]It's not about dropping these things from your diet. It's about replacing them.[/b:3vum75gy]

i can't really say anything forgotten hasn't. except for a lot of confectionary (sweets) aren't vegan (gelatin etc.) and apparently not a lot of people realise this.

That's true, I thought about that earlier. And unfortunately, most candies have gelatin in them.

is it true you can't drink dark beer, and you're not really suppose to eat ketchup as a vegan?

not only can you eat candy, you can't really eat any crisps either, well if they're salty.

i have a question about b12, will i need to take pills? because, there's no way for me to get that in now that i don't eat any meat, egg etc..

"Many vegan foods are supplemented with B12. A range of B12 fortified foods are available. These include yeast extracts, Vecon vegetable stock, veggieburger mixes, textured vegetable protein, soya milks, vegetable and sunflower margarines, and breakfast cereals." So, read labels and go for veggie burgers.

I don't know what crisps are. I hate dark beer so I've never had to worry about it. And ketchup is okay.

Ah I see. Well, I also was never a chip fan. I love tortilla chips, and those are vegan. They also have really good vegan snacks like Veggie Booty and Snapea Crisps that would be in the chip family. Also, they're just potatoes! They're not that hard to make. Just slice a spud up and throw it in the oven. Cooking your own food is better not only because you know every ingredient that you've used, but it's also [i:3ke9rkqx]much[/i:3ke9rkqx] cheaper. Here are what those snacks look like, by the way:

And I told this to Andy too: When you go grocery shopping, try to stay out of the isles as much as possible; stay in the produce section as much as you can. You know. Where the [i:3ke9rkqx]real[/i:3ke9rkqx] food is. Avoid processed foods. And [i:3ke9rkqx]read the labels[/i:3ke9rkqx]. The shorter the ingredients list is, the better. The first thing that is listed in the list is the main ingredient. The closer to the front of the list, the more of that substance is in use. Like for the Snapea Crisps, the first ingredient is actually snap peas rather than some foreign thing that you can't even pronounce.

this is all good info.

i'm not gonna be turning vegan myself but im gonna start eating better by actually stopping and reading the ingredients on things i buy instead of chucking them in the trolley.

I dont think I would be able to be vegan, I enjoy my lifestyle far too much, and that is ok!

People think being vegan is an unpleasant chore. And yeh, it's hard at first. But I wish some people would realize that it's actually [i:2bolhqsk]fun[/i:2bolhqsk] for some people. I [i:2bolhqsk]actually[/i:2bolhqsk] enjoy it. And seriously, good for you guys for enjoying your lifestyles. But so do we! You enjoy stuffing your face with Burger King and not wondering what they put in it. That makes you feel good. We enjoy researching it and eating what we find to be healthy for us. It makes [i:2bolhqsk]us[/i:2bolhqsk] feel good.

I'm not implying anyone said any different in this particular thread. I've read it before in other threads and felt the need to post it here.

No snap your fingers and wave your hand around while you do it, while resting your other hand on your hip.

Sometimes I think "man I should be a vegan man" but fajitas man... Fajitas.

I wasnt trying to poke fun at you at all. I totally respect vegans, its not just changing your eating habits, its an entire lifestyle change. I actually eat vegan and vegetarian foods and find them delicious. I just lack the discipline to fully commit. Like just last week I found out that some chardonnays have butter in them. Crazy. There are just so many foods and drinks that you would never even think of being non-vegan that are. And also, not all meat eaters stuff our faces at Burger King! I know lots of meat eaters that would never even be caught dead eating at fast food places. But I do realize that you enjoy being vegan. I also see that you said that you werent implying anyone said anything in this particular thread, I just didnt want you to think that I was an anti-vegan jerk or anything.

Well thank you for your words, they're much appreciated. And no, I hadn't pegged you for a vegan-hater, just for the record. And as for the Burger King comment, I hadn't meant to imply all meat eaters ate like that. I was just using an extreme to better get my point across.

are they are vegan equivalents of beef jerky?

I think it would take more than a few weeks for you to notice. I would give it a few months. And the difference is more apparent when you start eating meat/dairy again.

There are hella different brands of vegan jerky. I live in a [i:31t5qew6]hippy[/i:31t5qew6] town so I'll check their exact names next time I'm at the store.
