The T.O. Do List: June 19 2009

1. A year after calling it quits with The Distillers, Brody Dalle is back with a sleek haircut and glossy new sound to match. Spinnerette’s debut disc sees the returning scream-queen tone down her throat-ripping carnage to make more room for contagious melodies and ass-shaking hooks. She even channels Debbie Harry on the ethereal “Distorting a Code” and Pink (seriously!) on the quirky electro-pop of “Baptized by Fire.” Elsewhere, Dalle’s familiar rasp and dirty guitar-skronk reappear, but she’s traded in the punk for sexy, low-slung grooves bearing her hubby Josh Homme’s imprint. The motorik stomp of “Cupid” and fuzzed-out monotony of “A Prescription For Mankind” sound uncannily Queens of the Stone Ageish, partly because Homme’s long-time collaborator Alain Johannes co-penned the disc. Sure, Dalle’s pilfering musical ideas, but at least she’s stealing from the right people. Spinnerette play the Mod Club (722 College) tonight at 10pm.

Spinnerette
It’s been six years since Brody Dalle put out an album, but tonight the former Distillers frontwoman (and wife of Queens of the Stone Age singer Josh Homme) will hit the Bowery Ballroom with her new band Spinnerette. (The excellent Band of Skulls and Gay Blades are opening and worth showing up early for.)

Touring in support of its self-titled album, released earlier this month, Spinnerette capitalizes on Dalle’s trademark husky howl, but is more polished than punk. New York Press’ Rebecca Wallace spoke to Dalle about the new band, motherhood and Twitter.

So what do you like most about being in the City?
The food. My friends are here, so my friends who I never get to see. But everyone moved out of out of Manhattan to Brooklyn. Also, the 24-hour “Blade Runner”-esque feeling that you get you go to New York.

And this is your first American tour with Spinnerette—what sort of reception are you expecting?
So far, so good. We played three shows already [that] went very well. Good reception so far [and] I’m expecting more good weather.

How does Spinnerette differ from the Distillers?
I think it’s more musical, I think it’s more tonal—I think sometimes it’s heavier.

Do you think it will appeal to the same crowd?
No, probably not. Some of the kids have crossed over with it; some of them like it because they’re older. You know they’re five or six years older than when

I read that you don’t consider Spinnerette a band, it’s you and other various musicians… do you think you will be the only constant in the line-up as it changes?
No, when I said that I really meant the live band, not the recording band. There are two bands, the recording band, which is myself and Alain Johannes and Tony [Bevilacqua], and then there is the live band that is full of musicians that are fantastic right now that I adore. It’s just going so well there’s no need to change anything.

What I mean by that is with the Distillers there were so many incarnations, there was so much heartbreak, I don’t want to go through that again. I’d rather keep it lighter so that people understand that they can’t come and go as they please, and if it’s not working out for me with a certain person then... I try not to take it too seriously because it’s so silly. I think I’m just protecting myself and protecting my bandmates as well.

There have been a lot of personal extremes in your life since Coral Fang—raising a daughter, your father passing away…how do you think that’s affected your music?
It’s silly talking about it because it’s monumental. They affect your life in such surprising ways. You know, words just seem so frivolous when you talk about the death of someone you love or the birth of someone who changed your life. It’s monumental. My music is definitely affected by those experiences for sure.

Going back to the here and now, how do you think the recession will affect Spinnerette’s concerts and album sales?
I think we’re doing pretty well right now—Bowery Ballroom is sold out. That’s where the Distillers played, so I am not too worried. I know nobody’s selling 100,000 records these days, so if we sell 5,000 or 20,000 or 200,000…I’m going to keep playing music, pushing records out. The market is much smaller.

With this band, there are electronic releases and pages on social networking sites—stuff that wasn’t around to the same extent when your last record came out. How are you dealing with that stuff?
I was really adamant about doing some of this. Twitter, I really didn’t want to do, and I put it off for a really long time—and then people insisted and so now I complied. I don’t mind doing that; it’s pretty funny to read other peoples posts as well. It’s one of the only stable mediums right now to get your stuff out there. I kind of have a love-hate relationship with the Internet because you can go in there and have such a wealth of information. You have to be careful about that wealth of information though. You don’t really have a choice.

Brody Dalle - One of Fitzroy Melbourne's finest delinquent punk exports, has morphed once again into gravel-throated front woman mode. And what a relief, I missed that husk. The Dalle chronicles have been widely and romantically recounted several times, but how bout I mix it up and regurgitate them in point form?

- Angsty fifteen year old Dalle picks up a guitar, becoming involved in the productive all-female Rock n Roll High School program in Melbourne's inner north. Forms her first band 'Sourpuss' (ahh they don't make riot grrl names like that anymore!)

- The precocious Sourpuss play the now defunct Summersault festival, where a sixteen year old Dalle meets crusty kindred spirit Tim Armstrong (of Rancid), and shoots through. Landing in Los Angeles and marrying Armstrong at eighteen.

- Dalle forms The Distillers - the band catapults her into punk rock royalty - releasing venomously titled LPs Sing Sing Death House and Coral Fang, which both, for lack of a better descriptor, kicked arse.

And to cap of my 'Short history of Dalle', in no particular order: The Distillers implode, Dalle divorces Armstrong, marries Kyuss/QOTSA/Eagles of Death Metal's Josh Homme, has a baby, continues writing music, guests on millions of good mate's good albums, and conceives her new incarnation....which brings me to SPINNERETTE! (Sorry if I missed a huge milestone or two...)

A variation that Spinnerette heralds in the Brody Dalle approach seems to be the 'anything goes' perspective - administered with an energy that only a break and a breath of fresh air can deliver. Assembling four friends as a recording band (that just happen to hail from QOTSA, the Distillers, and Red Hot Chilli Peppers). The sound is drivingly familiar - anthemic, passionate, and with new occasional synth. Her evolutionary attitude to music has proved fruitful, notched up a few more tape reels, and respectably furthered the Dalle legacy. Here's my favourite track from what I've heard...

“I’m not interested in placating anyone anymore. I’m just not going to do it,” grunts Spinnerette vocalist/guitarist Brody Dalle, discussing her latest endeavour’s eponymous debut.

Best known for her work with punk rockers The Distillers in the earlier part of this decade, Dalle returns from a two-year hiatus with what is easily her most adventurous, ambitious effort to date. Spinnerette features infectious melodies intertwined with subtle harmonies slashing across a bold mixture of subdued punk heart and straight-up pop/rock. The 13-track affair is nothing less than stunning both musically and in terms of approach; a more palatable evolution beyond The Distillers’ revered 2003 effort Coral Fang.

“I’ve moved on but other people haven’t,” she continues. “I have a very different life. I’m going out on a limb. I find when I don’t censor myself, more original music comes out. When you give a f--- about what other people think, it stifles you.”

And to what does Dalle accredit this vast departure from her guttural roots into a more assertive personal pleasure? The same thing that eventually changes most lives: parenthood.

“I gave birth to a child. I don’t care about anyone else anymore,” she shrugs nonchalantly. “For nine months I didn’t feel like playing music. I couldn’t identify with it; wanted nothing to do with it. I picked curtains instead of writing songs. When my daughter was born, it was the most incredible thing but it was all-consuming. I couldn’t recognize myself when I looked in the mirror so I started writing music again. I’m a different person now, so (creating the album) was an accident that turned into a project that turned into a band.”

While it may seem like an eventuality to us average Joes, for others, becoming a parent has a greater impact when affecting an already-extraordinary life such as Dalle’s. The Melbourne, Australia native has released three album on powerful record labels, toured the world, married not one but two rock stars (Rancid’s Tim Armstrong and Queens Of The Stone Age’s Josh Homme, her current conjugal cohort), staved off addictions of various degrees, seen her formative outfit The Distillers come, go and morph into current project Spinnerette.

Not bad for someone barely hitting her 30th birthday. Still, as Brody promotes Spinnerette’s release through Canada’s own Anthem Records, she admits to be most humbled by the power of maternology. Conceding that both maternity and music have reinvigorated her own inner-child, Dalle indirectly deems them her greatest muse.

“It changes everything irreversibly and it’s a good thing, especially for me. I miss my family like crazy but this is my job. I don’t know how to do anything else and if I didn’t do it, I’d walk this earth like half a person.”
