So last night I got to thinking...why do we turn out the way we do?

Is it in our DNA or is our environment the reason? or a combination of both?

For instance, two girls were molested/sexually assaulted when they were kids and grew up in pretty similar environments.

1 girl starts having sex at a young age, experimenting with drugs, drops out of school and all those 'bad things.'
While the other girl does the complete opposite, and has the utmost respect for herself etc.

Why do you think this happens?
I'm curious as to what you all think, cuz I was just racking my brain last night ahahah

Here is a story. My mom was given up for adoption when she was a baby. She grew up with parents who didnt like sports, soft spoken, etc. My mom loved bowling, baseball (specifically Milwaukee Brewers since its where she lived) her parents never dug it. Then when she is 24 meets her biological mom and family. She is just like them. Loud, outspoken, and same mannerisms. Her family bowl all the time and love baseball. I think a lot is in the DNA.

Your question kind of answers itself. Because those two girls are different, and are of different natures, they adopted two different lifestyles. They both experienced a similar event, but both girls turned out in different ways... If it weren't for the girl's natures, they would have both grown up as very damaged children and both probably would have turned to drugs and sex at a young age. If not for they're natures, they both would have been effected by the event similarly.

it's easy to say "two girls get raped, one grows up to be a slut and the other grows up to be a successful person," and not consider all the other girls out there who grew up to be sluts even if they weren't raped. Same thing with girls who grew up to be successful in life.
Not only that, but this also depends on how you define "slut" and "successful."
It all depends on that girls [i:2ixhyy23]nature[/i:2ixhyy23]. The girl of one particular nature (girl #1) developed a very low self esteem from that point on and, because it's in her nature, ended up using drugs and having sex because it was fun and made her feel good (good about herself perhaps?) and quit school because her low self esteem and lack of a will to improve herself. Some people might call her a quitter, after being raped as a kid she just quit and gave up on life.

Girl 2 in her (probable) optimistic and perhaps aggressive or strong willed nature probably said To hell with this shit and put it all behind her and decided she would succeed in life, it was a bad experience that made her stronger.

Also, there are plenty of people who use drugs AND are successful in life (not to mention the group of people who make their fortune from drug related activities mind you.) and there are plenty of successful/important/famous people who dropped out of school. Abe Lincoln wasn't even home schooled, he was SELF educated and he was one of the greatest presidents. The wright brothers didn't even complete high school and they fucking invented human flight...
Benjamin Franklin was a wise motherfucker and he was one of the founding fathers, he did so much for this country alone and he was a stoner. He started the first group of firemen, amongst other things.

A person can be taught things (by their parents for example) but that doesn't necessarily MOLD that person and doesn't always effect the way that person will think or act.

Also, haven't you ever heard the story about the scorpion and the frog?

I've never heard that story
[/quote:17yio2ks]

a scorpion wants to cross a river but he can't swim, so he goes and finds a frog (who can swim) and asks the frog to ferry him across the river. The frog replies "but you are a scorpion, how do I know you won't sting me?!" and the scorpion says "I cannot swim and if I were to sting you we will both drown." The frog sees the logic in the scorpion's words and agrees to ferry the scorpion across the river.
The frog takes the scorpion onto his back and sets off across the river. about half way across he feels a burning sting in his back. The scorpion stung him after all. The frog succumbs to the scorpions poison and begins to sink. As he sinks he calls out "why did you sting me mr. scorpion?! For now we will both drown!" the scorpion replies "I can't help it, it's in my nature."

Several twin studies have shown that different environments make little difference when genes are completely identical, except for some mutations.

I think it's a mixture of both. Not gonna crap on about genetics coz that'd end up boring but a lot of diseases/conditions, behaviours, etc are a result of your genetic make up and the interaction between those genes and the environment.

Yup, I have come to my own conclusion, of mainly genetics/dna ...though environment does shape you to some extent I don't think it greatly determines how you turn out.

What you are asking is completely unanswerable. I notice a lot of people veering towards nature, but it's not that simple.

Having studied both Sociology and Psychology, I've heard the arguments for both sides of the coin, yet both also admit that the other has a part to play. But here's the thing - it varies from person to person.

The most common explination for criminals (from minor to major) is upbringing. However, this neither accounts from those who we term 'born bad' (those who turn to crime despite major advantages in life) or those with an incredibly poor upbringing who do not. Thus the whole thing is a complicated dance between nature and nurture.

i lean more towards nuture now because of my work with dogs - but then it's the same old argument with this, a dog learns what is wrong/right (or rather what works e.g. sitting means food) from humans but training takes advantage of the nature bit. But I also think, no one is born evil/bad.

But then I'm very similar to my parents in the way I react to things and do stuff (as well as looking like them), is it genetic or have i picked it up.

omg yes it's unanswerable
