STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. (Sept. 2) - Police say a 61-year-old man annoyed with a crying 2-year-old girl at a suburban Atlanta Walmart slapped the child several times after warning the toddler's mother to keep her quiet.
A police report says after the stranger hit the girl at least four times, he said: "See, I told you I would shut her up."

Roger Stephens of Stone Mountain is charged with felony cruelty to children. It was unclear if he had an attorney and a telephone call to his home Wednesday was unanswered.
Authorities say the girl and her mother were shopping Monday when the toddler began crying. The police report says Stephens approached the mother and said, "If you don't shut that baby up, I will shut her up for you."
Authorities say Stephens then grabbed the 2-year-old and slapped her. The child began screaming and Stephens was arrested. Police say an examination showed the girl's face was slightly red.
A call to the girl's mother, identified in the police report as Sonya Mathews of Grayson, was answered by a woman who identified herself as Sabrina Mathis, the victim's aunt.
Mathis said Wednesday that the girl is doing fine.
"As of today, she has really forgotten about it," Mathis said. "She's been playing."
Mathis said the girl's mother was shaken up over the incident.
"She's as well as to be expected," Mathis said. "Right now she's just trying to calm down."

I think that being a parent has made me more tolerant when it comes to crying children, but I still would never ever slap somebody's kid. Sometimes kids just cry and there's nothing you can do about it. It's not because of bad parenting (some of the comments from the website suggested otherwise) or "an asshole kid." Little kids are easily overwhelmed and they cry.

simon regularly takes our son to child's play (a big play house with ball pools and slides etc....) and this one time a boy who was much bigger than tyler deliberately pushed him off a ledge. simon saw this and walked right up to the boy and just stared at him. the boy ran off but simon kept staring at him throughout the time they were there. the boy stayed away so i think the message got through although simon said he really wanted to thump him but i guess its natural when other kids bother your own.

kids ARE assholes, not just some, all. All kids are assholes

The guy who slapped the kid must be imprissoned and must be punished more than that.

thinking about it, there are those parents out there that take there kids into movies, stores, restaurants. and just let children cry, and cry and cry and whine and cry and cry. there's a point when... yeah, you become tolerant to the crying and moaning of your own child, but there's also a point when it doesn't need to be shared with everyone else for the sake of their sanity when enjoying "their" time out and about. If your baby is going to just be non-stop crying obviously the parent needs to do something about it... 1. step outside, 2. go in the bathroom (MAYBE THE DAMN KID HAS A PISSY DIAPER AND DOESNT WANT TO FESTER IN IT) 3. just don't be stupid and make other people have tolerate YOUR children in the midst of their enjoyment. i'm sure we've all experienced that shattered enjoyment status.

that happened to me the other day in what was meant to be my relaxing evening in a quiet wine bar.

a woman turned up with 3 kids between the ages of about 4 - 9.

they were doing the whole 'yay lets run around hyper' the entire time, the little bastards!!!!!!!!!!!

some mums need to be more strict!

Recently I saw an 8 year old (well he looked 8) riding around on his bike drinking fosters!!! and heard a kid who was about 3 say 'fuck'! and yeh it's really annoying when kids cry and they won't shut up and sometimes it's because of the way their parents are with them but it's no excuse to hit someone else's kid.

Sometimes you want to hit a kid but a three year old, come on! A little too young too hit. The guy has had a rough life.
