I want to learn a new language. I want it to be one that won't be very useful, like Spanish.

Just to clarify, I don't mean that I want to learn a not useful language such as Spanish. I was using Spanish as an example of a language that would be useful.

Portuguese and Spanish are so close, using what limited Spanish I know I'm able to guess translations from portuguese to english. Sometimes it's as easy as just sounding the word out and listening to what spanish (or even english) words it sounds like...

Spanish is an easy language to get a hold on, it's also very practical here in the states right now. Regardless of how USEFUL it is, i think spanish is a very poetic, romantic language.

After spanish I would say German, not very poetic at all but still an interesting language. I like it a lot. Want to learn it. I always think of spanish as being a poetic language and german being an intellectual language. NO REASON BEHIND THIS. Just how I think of the two languages...

I always wanted to learn Russian because of how foreign it sounds. It looks like a challenging language and I like that.

French is so cliche, but I've considered adding it to my list of things to learn.

Wouldn't touch italian, it does nothing for me.

And of all the asian languages I would probably choose japanese. Just because it's popular.

Finally, don't forget sign language! This one seems fun and challenging.

If you want a challenge, learn Norwegian.

I agree Spanish is a lovely sounding language.

I think sign language is a great idea though! I'd quite like to do that.

I don't want too much of a challenge. I mean, learning a new language isn't going to be easy, I know, but I don't want it to be crazy hard. I think German would be cool. I have quite a bit of German ancestry. Russian would be too useful to me, but it is a really pretty language.
Sign language would be cool. I might do that one too...

How is German not useful?

I'm one of the few people on this planet who find it beautiful. I actually think it IS poetic. Definitely in my top 5 favourite languages.

Strongly recommended.

its definitely not for everyone...german i mean.
BUT i agree...it is indeed very poetic acutally.
....after all, apart from being famous for hitler and having no sense of humour we used to be famous for our poets and thinkers....

I always associate Germany and the German language with the kind of darkness, almost macabre.

I get it from Expressionist art and the seedy sort of culture shown in movies like Cabaret (probably not authentic I realise, but still...) people like Marlene Deitrich who I thought had a dark quality about her. All of which I find fascinating and beautiful.

It maybe naive or cliche, I've never been to Germany, and this is probably not what people who know the country see, which is why I'd like to visit.

I used to have a major major crush on a half-German person. It is really kind of embarrassing, I ended up harrassing him with my friends. Whoops.

Also, on 5th. primary when we went on a school trip to the Alps we had a snow war against the Germans.. because they destroyed our snow statues. Their teachers forced them to stop so we won. We wanted to sing our national anthem when entering the cantine but our teachers only allowed us to do it outside so no one was there to hear it except us.

Good times.

the 1920ies were, artistically, a wonderful period in germany.

i love german expressionists (literature) do you know gottfried benn or georg trakl etc?

I'm desperate to learn Swedish. I actually know a little already, but not enough to have a conversation.
I've started reading news in Swedish, have learned one word: styrränta. Very useful.

If you go for Norwegian, then you will learn some swedish as well. Or Vice versa. (they are very similar). and if you put a very hot potatoe in you mouth you will automaticlly speak Danish.

So thats three languages in one!
